Describe your church plant or ministry, your context and some of your mission priorities.
In the late '90s, Emmaus Road began as an energetic group of 20-somethings wanting to explore fellowship, spiritual discipline, and worship in new ways. We championed "Church Beyond Sunday". We were a small urbane crew, pledging to walk alongside one another as Christ walks alongside us. At that time, we were neighborhood nomads, lacking a specific missional or geographic focus beyond the initially gathered crowd. We welcomed those who found us through relationship. Years later, however, Emmaus Road landed in Belltown on Sundays. The neighborhood challenged us. Our eyes were opened to the individuals and issues surrounding our worship location, including tensions between tower and street culture. Today, Emmaus Road is trying to move beyond our first attempts at nurturing a core community, answering the call to live out the Gospel by walking alongside the neighbors who rise and fall around us. We are challenged to grow, not merely by finding more like-minded believers drawn to our creed or methods, but to grow as we traverse through spiritual yet churchless culture around us. Our challenge is to experience Christ's saving companionship with strangers who are ready to be welcomed into the Kingdom as friends.
